A NEW YEAR; A FRESH START |
LORIANWORKS ORGANIZING TIP #5 |
|
Welcome to 2005! Some people choose this as the time to get rolling on their Spring cleaning. I hypothesize this has something to do with the feeling of getting a fresh start or getting started on those New Year’s resolutions that “this year” is the year we will get organized, have a place for every little tiny thing, and be completely organized. I applaud your efforts and wish you a very tidy environment.
Economy Improving?
I’m not an economist, but I am seeing a lot more cases of companies growing and expanding out there. I see this as a sign that the economy is improving. I have gotten calls like, “I’m growing really quickly and my new employees can’t figure out how my filing system works… in fact there real isn’t a consistent system in place… can you help?” I am seeing other signs out there as well. People I know in the employment and recruiting fields are starting to see the large corporations hiring back positions that were eliminated during the “dot bomb” of 2001. Every the optimist, I’d like to propose a toast a prosperous year and an improved economy. All the best to you all, Heather Shaw Your Personal Organizer & Virtual Assistant |
Clear Your Desk! Clear your desk! If you have stuff cluttering your desk and you are losing stuff, get a box and put in anything you don’t recognize as current and necessary. Schedule time to go through the box and purge or ready for filing. Sounds simple, doesn’t it. It can be effective, but I highly recommend doing the follow up. Ignoring the box once you clear your desk may be a bad idea. Then again, it may be that you don’t really need anything in that box and you can eventually just throw away the entire thing!
You may have several collections of “To Do” lists. They are probably even successful a lot of the time. Are the projects related to every item that has been haunting you on your desk written on this list? If it were on there, would you need the pieces on your desk? Or could you file them away in the drawer? I think a lot of people keep stuff out so they won’t forget, but our brains have enough to remember without relying on them unnecessarily. If all your projects are written down on one list and all you have to do is skim that, then your efforts are a lot less. |

LORIAN RECOMMENDS… |

Inexpensive… Could Save You Thousands Seen all the commercials lately where people are imposters using people’s credit cards? Funny commercials, huh? Not a funny situation. I’ve seen a few statistics about the number of people who will be affected by identity theft and it is downright scary. There are subscriber services out there that can help you out, one of which is available through Pre-Paid Legal. However, it would be nice not to have to use these services. There are several preventative measure you can take to avoid being a victim such as not leaving your mail out for the mail carrier to collect, getting a locking street mail box, not supplying personal information over the internet (hard to do nowadays), not carrying around your social security number or card in your wallet, and shredding any mail with personal and financial information on it.
These precautions seem
pretty easy to do, but you would be surprised at the number of clients or
people I have consulted I don’t have a particular shredder that is “the bomb.” I do suggest, however, that you choose something that does cross-cut shredding. The one pictured here (Privacy Guard RTP-018050 Cross-Cut Shredder) can be found at OfficeDepot.com for $39.95. A small price to pay if it can save you the hassle of having someone steal your identity. |
